Stunning Huddersfield hotel opening in old courthouse

A swanky hotel in a former court building is set to open in Huddersfield town centre later this month.

Stay Hotel, in the former Huddersfield Crown Court building, is expected to open to guests on May 17.

The 23-bedroom hotel, opposite Huddersfield Town Hall, is the latest venture from Huddersfield-born property man Awaias Riaz. As well as 20 double and kingsize rooms there are two junior suites and a master suite. The Stay, which was last used as Kirklees Council offices, also comes with bar and restaurant Fika which will be serving brunch and dinner.

Last year, Awaias, 30, from Birkby, opened the 42 Apart-Hotel in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, and his company Stay Hotel Group plans to open hotels in Blackburn and Middlesbrough. They aren’t places you’d typically go on holiday but Awaias thinks he’s found a gap in the market.

He says: “With Stay in Huddersfield we are hoping to bring a touch of luxury to the town centre. Our target audience would be people visiting Huddersfield on business, to meet family, parents for students at the uni. Also events that may take place in Huddersfield concerts etc, or just people who want a night away. He adds: “It’s always special to add to your local town and provide something new for the people. I hope it can be a place for the locals to enjoy as well as guests travelling into Huddersfield. I hope this encourages more people to invest in the town centre. And yes, you can stay in a double room in what used to be the basement cell block, although it’s considerably more luxurious than it was when it was used to hold defendants decades ago. Awaias said: “It’s one of the best double rooms in the hotel with so much character!
